The scandal that BROKE Australia
Welcome to our in-depth exploration of RoboDebt, a significant and controversial chapter in Australia's welfare history. In this video, we unravel the complexities of RoboDebt, a government initiative intended to recover overpaid social security benefits, and examine its far-reaching impact on the lives of many Australians.
RoboDebt was introduced in 2016 by the Australian Government with the goal of identifying and reclaiming overpayments made to welfare recipients. The system employed an automated data-matching process that compared individuals' income reported to Centrelink with their reported earnings from the Australian Taxation Office. Any discrepancies led to debt notices being issu...

Aww come on. Are people still falling for the LNP and Murdoch press's lies about Gillard's climate policy? It was a fixed-price carbon period leading into an emissions trading scheme. Exactly what economists recommended at the time. It was *not* a carbon tax. It also *worked*. It saw our carbon emissions reduce significantly during the time it was enacted. Gillard did the right thing here, except that she didn't push back against the lies hard enough that apparently people still believe it today. Sometimes out of ignorance, sometimes as a deliberate way to try and blame the Greens in order to push a pro-Labor agenda (looking at you: Jordan Shanks). The Greens also did the right thing by blocking Rudd's policy. His own treasury modelling said it would have no effect for decades. *Decades*. And it had terms written into it that if we wanted to ratchet it up so it actually _would_ have an effect, we'd have to _pay the polluters_ to do it! Gillard was an excellent politician, and it's because she was willing to compromise to get the best policy past Parliament. Rudd was an egotistical arse who is almost as much to blame for our lost decade in left-leaning policy and climate action as Murdoch and the LNP are. (The fact that he's an egotistical arse whose colleagues didn't like working with him is a not-insignificant part of why he was ousted in the first place.)

I lost my brother, and nearly me, because of the errors that Robodebt created. I will never ever forgive each and any one of the persons involved with the creation and execution of Robodebt. Long story short, my brother and I were separately slapped with absurdly high amounts (over $140,000) of false fines on top of baseless notices of money owed. No body in any echelons of government was able to explain or justify what was going on, and nor could they really help. Eventually, after months and months of battling this, it did ultimately get resolved - but sadly, the amount of stress, uncertainty, harassment, anxiety, and everything in between, got the best of my brother. He was an amazing man, a tremendous loss to our country. I nearly was thinking of going myself, because no one -- absolutely no one, can understand the pain and anguish this Robodebt brought other than the ones who experienced it. So, Mr. ScoMo and all those who supported this scheme, the passing of my brother and hundreds of other victims, is on you.

Yes he created putin. Yeltsin as a us lapdog, posing as a democratic leader but acting as an autocratic one. He drove the russian people into poverty by removing price checks and letting them go unregulated. People were just selling everything they owned for a fraction if its value. To make things worse, during privatization, the russian people were handled vouchers to buy stocks in different companies, but because everyone was in such a bad financial condition they sold everything for a fraction of its value to oligarchs, creating the oligarch problem it has today. Boris also demonstrated he wasnt a democratic leader by shelling his oppositiin in parliament. Fuck yeltsin. And especially, fuck tony blair

This was truly a low point of Australian democracy and suggests that ministers should pass an IQ and social intelligence test before taking the appointment. The whole idea that a machine could run a government program and make the decisions that affect people's lives without human oversight, was something only a sociopath could seriously consider much less mandate. I thought Australia was better than that. Hopefully we learnt the lesson.

Its actually incorrect to say "The automated system often generated incorrect debt notices due to flawed data matching" as not one of the fraudulent debts identified was done so using any form of procedural fairness. It also involved multiple violations of law. So technically and legally, NONE of the notices and NONE of the debts were correct.

Robodebt was started by Shorten/ALP in 2011 to catch an extra 65,000 people to help Swan/ALP get a surplus budget. Coalition in 2016 took Labors scheme to a fully automated scheme ""Media Release: New data matching to recover millions in welfare dollars 29 June 2011 A new data matching initiative between Centrelink and the Australian Taxation Office is expected to claw back millions of dollars from welfare recipients who have debts with the Australian Government. Minister for Human Services Tanya Plibersek and Assistant Treasurer Bill Shorten today said the new initiative will enhance Centrelink’s debt recovery ability and is expected to recover more than $71 million over four years....... Mr Shorten said the tax garnishee process had been carried out manually once a year for the past 15 years and involved a significant amount time on the part of the departmental officers. "The automation of this process will free up resources and result in more people being referred to the tax garnishee process, retrieving more outstanding debt on behalf of taxpayers," he said. He said more than $27.5 million was recovered from over 43,000 former Centrelink customers' tax refunds in the 2009/10 financial year through the tax garnishee process. "The new data matching link is expected to increase the number of former customers identified for this process by an additional 65,000, above current detection levels, over the four years."

He was a panic merchant. Invading Australia was never a strategic aim of Japan, but it was to isolate it. We knew this because we had cracked all the Japanese codes. The Japanese war aim was Burma, to block supplies going to China (RoC, not PRC), and to invade India. Curtin complied with all the Axis hopes to panic Curtin into opting out of WWII. After the Battle of Coral Sea Japan simply didn’t have the naval resources to invade Australia, and Japanese army resources were in Burma and China. There were six fully equipped divisions, including an armoured division, at sea, bound for Suez, ib July 1942. Churchill said, as in this WWII Memoirs, that these divisions would have been diverted to Australia if there was any realistic chance of Australia being invaded, but it was concluded that there was no chance of that. These six divisions arrived at Suez c.1st Sept 1942 and it was these six divisions which delivered the death blow to Rommel’s Afrika Korps at the Second Battle of Alamein in October 1942,- the turning point in the war against Germany and Italy. Read your history and see what was the Big Picture, and not the party political propaganda nonsense of Curtin at the time. As Churchill said, “Australian politicians were more interested in fighting each other than in fighting the enemy”.
